      <image:caption>Nutritionally variant Streptococci are not typically able to be isolated using standard media and can be missed as a cause of pneumonia. In this example, Granulicatella, a pathogenic nutritionally-variant Streptococcus was easily isolated using BioSherpa™ STS (bottom) while the control sample grew none. We suspect that a component of BioSherpa™ STS provides the requisite nutrient to support growth.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>This is an example of how BioSherpa™ STS can be a game changer. After 3 days of effective antibiotics the control sample showed no growth other than normal flora. BioSherpa™ STS can enable doctors to obtain a specific diagnosis and de-escalate antibiotic therapy. In fact, our research shows that if BioSherpa™ STS is used, there is at least a 30% greater chance of isolating the causative pathogen when a patient is on antibiotics compared to standard methods.</image:caption>

      <image:title>BioSherpa™ STS facilitates growth of organism more rapidly than conventional methods - The use of BioSherpa™ STS facilitated the identification of Proteus 24 hours earlier than control, which allowed for clinical modification of the patient’s care.</image:title>
      <image:caption>BioSherpa™ STS facilitates faster diagnosis of infectious agents. This photo illustrates 24 hours of growth. The “swarming” characteristic of the Proteus is evident on the BioSherpa™ STS plate. It is easily distinguishable from the Pseudomonas also growing on both plates. There is no clear growth of Proteus on the control plate. The isolation of Proteus a full 24 hours earlier allowed us to modify antibiotic therapy sooner than would otherwise be possible. Pseudomonas is present on both control and BioSherpa™ STS at 24 hours. The Proteus is easily distinguishable from the Pseudomonas on BioSherpa™ STS but not on control.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Multiple pathogens isolated from bone sample while patient on broad-spectrum antibiotics - BioSherpa ™ STS identified multiple strains from a bone sample while a patient was on antibiotics.</image:title>
      <image:caption>BioSherpa™ STS can be used for a variety of biological samples. In this example we see how it can be used to coax causative pathogens out of a bone sample. This is extremely significant because the patient was on vancomycin and piperacillin tazobactam for 6 days before culture. This infection also had an aggressive soft tissue component and required immediate broad spectrum treatment before eventual bone culture (from amputation).</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Multiple pathogens isolated from bone sample while patient on broad-spectrum antibiotics - BioSherpa ™ STS yielded multiple strains whereas controls yielded none.</image:title>
      <image:caption>BioSherpa™ STS could potentially help elucidate the infectious agent in samples that traditionally yield negative results. This patient required more aggressive antibiotic therapy. Reliance on standard bone culture techniques would have left the patient under-treated and at high risk for failure.</image:caption>

The culture result on the right was taken after weeks of antibiotic therapy and normalization of inflammatory markers. The same isolate was present based on the antibiotic susceptibility pattern. <image:caption>A de-escalation of antibiotic treatment to the patient, avoiding significant side effects and cost. An increase in hospital Case Mix Index due to diagnostic specificity. An economic benefit to the hospital of almost $1,800 resulting from a cost savings of almost $1,000 by using a more targeted antibiotic and an increased reimbursement to the hospital of almost $800 due to allowances for enhanced diagnostic specificity. More accurate data that will easily interface with advanced electronic medical record charge capture platforms such as Epic.</image:caption>
